Description

As Turnip Truck expanded west, MZA renovated an existing Cash & Carry into a full-service market near Sylvan Park. The transformation kept much of the existing building's masonry, supplementing it with new volumes and green infrastructure at the top to support the grocer's mission. A dramatic corner entrance draws customers in with an iconic green ribbon wrapping around the façade and shading the storefront. Bioretention areas, pervious paving, and rooftop solar panels turn a once-impervious site into a sustainability success story. Inside, MZA exposed the building’s barrel vault roof, removed layers of ceilings, and maximized daylight. A mezzanine offers office space and overlooks the bustling store below. With its green roof-capable rooftop canopy and sunlight streaming through an oversized east window in the morning, the building is both smart and spiritual, contributing clean energy (and fresh vegetables) to the community of West Nashville.
