Segment is a 34-unit residential complex in Nashville's Wedgewood-Houston neighborhood by MZA for Core Development, located on a corner lot and aimed to infill with density without sacrificing human-scale street presence. The tension was how to achieve balance between privacy and city vibrancy in this creative, energy-charged neighborhood. MZA devised a stepped, in-and-out exterior that provides space to catch one's breath along the sidewalk and draws light and air into the homes. Townhomes sit as corner units with roof decks and concealed parking spaces. Flats recall the industrial heritage of the surrounding neighborhood with metal siding and commercial windows looking out over Pillow Street. Within, each home features open floor plans and abundant daylight. The project was awarded a 2021 Land Institute Excellence in Development Award and introduces a thoughtfully scaled, pedestrian-friendly presence to a growing neighborhood.
